Anonymous's Story #1- (submission)
may tenth, two thousand twenty one
I was born in the US though my parents immigrated to the US when they were quite young. They both left to flee the oppressive communist regime in China. I will tell you my mother's story. She was born into a wealthy banking family in Shanghai; her father worked for General Chiang Kai-Shek who was fighting on behalf of China against the Japanese at the time. His job was to help transport ammunition and war supplies into Shanghai whose ports had been cut off by the Japanese, so my mother and two of her three sisters grew up in India where her father oversaw the building of the Burma Road which brought much needed supplies into China through India. At the time, my mom's youngest sister remained in Shanghai being raised by Mom's grandmother because it was determined that she was too young to live in India. In 1949, when the Communists came into power in China, the family had to flee China because of their association with Chiang Kai-Shek, who was considered an enemy of the Communist party. While they were given safe passage to America, once again, they left the youngest daughter, Baby Jeannette, behind since she was only two at the time. They thought they would be reunited in a couple of years' time. Little did they know that it would be 30 years before they saw Jeannette again when she was finally able to leave China in 1980. She is now living happily in America with her husband and her daughter.
